Where did the 1500 byte MTU come from anyway

byArron King 02.20.2020 TechBITS

I manage to stumble across a large number of bits of curiosity while researching technology topics.   Some of these make me scratch my head wondering how I never heard of it before.  I thought i would write some of them down.  Welcome to TechBITs!

These days, we just plug in a patch cable into our server and the machine gets on the network and off to work.  For the most part it isn’t a big deal.    I wish I could say I fondly recall the days of stripping the end of a coax cable to get a workstation on the Thinnet.  While I do remember it – fond is not a word I would use of that memory.

If you have worked in systems administration or networking for any length of time, you should at least be familiar with the standard 1500 byte MTU.  Do you know How the 1500 bytes became the MTU of the Internet?
